Course Overview

The Policy and Procedure Writing for IT (PPW-IT) course is an intensive 5-day training program to prepare participants to create effective, transparent, and compliant policies and procedures tailored explicitly for Information Technology (IT) operations and Internet Technology management. Using Bloom’s Taxonomy, participants will progress from foundational knowledge to advanced writing and implementation strategies, ensuring they can develop documentation aligned with IT industry standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational needs.

 

This course is ideal for IT professionals, technical writers, and managers tasked with creating or managing IT-related documentation such as cybersecurity policies, acceptable use policies, disaster recovery plans, etc.

COURSE OUTLINE

 

Day 1: IT Policy and Procedure Fundamentals

     Overview of IT-specific regulatory requirements and standards

     Components of effective IT policies and procedures

     Activity: Review and critique examples of IT policies

 

Day 2: Writing IT-Specific Policies and Procedures

     Writing for a technical and non-technical audience

     Structuring IT policies: acceptable use, cybersecurity, data protection, etc

     Formatting and consistency in IT documentation

     Activity: Drafting an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

 

 

Day 3: Risk Analysis and Compliance in IT Documentation

     Conducting risk assessments and integrating findings into policies.

     Aligning IT policies with compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST Cybersecurity Framework, HIPAA).

     Evaluating IT operational needs to inform procedural development.

     Activity: Analyze an IT incident scenario and draft a related policy or procedure.

 

Day 4: Advanced IT Document Development

     Writing disaster recovery and business continuity plans.

     Developing IT-specific procedures for system updates, incident response, and vendor management.

     Collaborating with IT teams and stakeholders to ensure accuracy.

     Activity: Draft a disaster recovery plan outline based on a real-world IT scenario.

 

Day 5: Implementation and Continuous Improvement in IT Policy Writing

     Strategies for policy deployment and training IT staff.

     Monitoring and revising IT policies to address evolving technologies and risks.

     Peer reviews and stakeholder feedback in the IT context.

     Activity: Final project – Develop a complete cybersecurity policy or IT operational procedure, followed by group presentation and feedback.
